ALBERT L.
Age AT FILING: 17 | Hometown: Montréal, Quebec
Albert resides in Montréal, Québec. Albert enjoys hiking and biking, but the severity of heat waves has affected his ability to be outdoors safely, causing episodes of dehydration, dizziness, and heat exhaustion. Temperatures he once considered “extreme” in his childhood are now regularly exceeded during the summer.
In the summer of 2024, Albert was exposed to the worst air quality in the world for several days due to wildfire smoke, forcing him to stay inside and cancel outdoor activities. Other extreme winter weather events have led to cancellations of public transportation services Albert relies on to commute to school and work.
Albert is intellectually, emotionally and psychologically invested in the fight against climate change, dedicating much of his life to organizing against policies that cause climate change and in building systems that center the well-being of young people and the lands they inhabit. In conjunction with the climate change impacts that he has seen and experienced, Albert has studied present ecological, economic and socio-political impacts from climate change, and the dire projections if emissions are not reduced consistent with the best available science. As a result, he has a deep understanding of the impact that climate change is having on his future.
Albert has been a committed environmentalist since he was seven years old, and, as a teenager, regularly led and participated in school strikes, protests and other civic actions. He has dedicated his career to fighting the climate crisis and building resilient legal systems, which he views as a vital discipline of hope.
