CECILIA L.
Age AT FILING: 15 | Hometown: TORONTO, CANADA
Cecilia resides in Toronto, where she works in the maritime industry and spends much of her free time at her family’s cottage north of Toronto. Cecilia has long been a community organizer and a plaintiff in La Rose v. His Majesty the King, a landmark youth-led constitutional climate lawsuit against the Canadian federal government. The case is set to go to trial in October 2026, marking a pivotal moment in the effort to hold governments accountable for their role in the climate crisis.
Cecilia was diagnosed with allergy-induced asthma as a child, which is triggered by airborne pollutants. Growing up, Cecilia began to experience more severe asthmatic episodes due to the extreme rise and fall in temperatures and to the longer periods of high pollen counts due to a longer warm season in Toronto. Cecilia’s asthma also makes her more susceptible to health injuries from the hazardous air quality that has plagued Toronto from the severe wildfires Canada has experienced in recent years.
The increasingly extreme temperatures in Ontario due to climate change have had a severe impact on Cecilia’s lungs, negatively affecting daily activities, particularly her work that requires her to be outside in all conditions.
Born and raised in Toronto, Cecilia has spent years working to make outdoor spaces more accessible to urban youth—introducing young people to birding, canoeing, and Toronto’s urban forest. Her passion for environmental justice extends to her work in urban arboriculture, where she has studied and developed practical knowledge to better support her community. Cecilia is a committed advocate for equitable access to nature and believes deeply in youth leadership in the fight against climate change.
