LA ROSE V. HIS MAJESTY THE KING
The La Rose v. His Majesty the King curriculum is designed to invite students and educators into discussion about climate change, their rights, and what the future holds for Canada. La Rose is a youth-led federal climate case set to go to trial on October 26, 2026. The sixteen youth who are bringing this case claim that the federal government of Canada is contributing to dangerous climate change by enacting and implementing laws and policies that enable fossil fuels and lock in substantial amounts of climate pollution. The youth argue that the federal government is violating their rights to life, liberty, and security of the person under section 7 of the Charter.
As trial approaches, youth across Canada want to know what’s at stake—and what this case means for their Charter Rights. Utilize this educator's guide to inform your students about the facts and law underpinning La Rose v. His Majesty the King, climate science, and how the Canadian government contributes to climate change.
Included in this guide are resources on climate change and discussion questions that can be used for classroom or small group discussion, personal essay topics, or homework. You can read through the curriculum together as a class, or assign the curriculum as homework.
