NAVAHINE V. HDOT
The Navahine Lesson Plan for Creative Nonfiction and Scientific Storytelling is a first-of-its-kind free curriculum centered on Navahine v. Hawaiʻi Department of Transportation, the landmark youth-led constitutional climate case that resulted in a historic settlement advancing Hawaiʻi’s transition to a zero-emissions transportation system and affirming youth rights to a life-sustaining climate.
In this unit, 11th- and 12th-grade students engage in a two-session English lesson plan that combines creative nonfiction, scientific storytelling, research, and civic learning. Students explore what a life-sustaining climate means to them, examine the Navahine settlement through guided instruction and personal narratives, and create posters explaining the case’s significance and youth climate rights in Hawaiʻi, which they then share with audiences beyond the classroom.
This curriculum is designed as a two-session lesson plan and can be adapted into stand-alone activities to fit a variety of classroom schedules. To download this free curriculum, please complete the form on the right.
